VILLAGE
Askrigg is known all over the world as the fictional town of Darrowby in All Creatures Great and Small, the 1970s BBC series based on the books of James Herriot (real-life vet Alfred White whose practice was in Thirsk). Much of the filming took place here and you’ll recognise Skeldale House and the Drover’s Arms (actually the King’s Arms) in the main street. But there’s a lot more to the place than the fictional facade. We’re served by no fewer than three pubs (one a hotel) all serving local ale and good food; a well-stocked village shop which is also a newsagent, cafe, and B and B; lots more B and Bs (all of a high standard); another cafe, a delicatessen serving home-cooked takeaway snacks and meals, a fish and chip van on a Wednesday evening, a gift shop, a post office service twice week, a potter and a even a small art gallery. Oh yes – and it also has its own brewery. It’s an excellent centre for walking the Dales, whether you want a gentle stroll to the river, a slightly more strenuous walk to Mill Gill waterfall, or a full-blown hike across the moors.
For those who choose to make their homes here there are lots of things to do: book clubs, a lively WI (whose members, along with the usual activities, do soup and sweet lunches once a month), a sports and learning centre,a well-used village hall, guided walks, art classes, choirs and a host of other activities.
There’s also an excellent village school and a lively church. In fact, Askrigg has it all. We’re gradually building the website, and not everybody or everything is represented here yet. But we’re getting there. Explore the site and let us know what you think. Click here for contact details.
