YUM YUM! WE LOVE CHURCH

HEATHER HODGSON WRITES . . .
Man does not live by bread alone . . . so true. He can also survive on Elizabeth’s yummy milk bread locusts!  As so it was at on Sunday, when the children were learning at their special service about Jesus’s time in the desert as he fasted for forty days and forty nights. The devil taunted Jesus, and as Christians we remember this time during Lent. The children learned how Jesus found his strength and was able begin his teaching after such a trial.
Everyone partook of a communion wafer and said the Lord’s prayer by the altar along with Ann. The children were each given a small card on which to write something that they’ve done wrong recently and that they feel sorry about. Their ‘sorries’ ranged from losing their temper with a sibling, being cruel to a friend and not keeping their bedroom tidy. The small cards were then pinned to a small wooden cross to be replaced by ribbons of forgiveness on Easter Sunday.  It was nice to see the children so focused on their task and to have this valuable thinking time to consider what they need to feel sorry for.
Then came the yummy part!  Everyone ran to the back of the church to dip locusts in honey (Fairtrade, of course) and to think about how hard it must have been for Jesus with all the temptations put his way.  Naturally, they went down a treat and although Jesus didn’t have Elizabeth’s wonderful homemade bread in the desert, we could still think of him.

‘THE REAL-LIFE VICAR OF DIBLEY’

Oh really? It may not be quite how we see our vicar, Ann Chapman, but that’s how she’s described in the press release for the new 12-part ITV1 series, The Dales, which started Monday 28 March at 8.00pm.
“From the Wensleydale Railway to Leyburn Brass Band and a real-life Vicar of Dibley, The Dales provides a unique insight into one of England’s most iconic locations through the eyes of the people who live there,” reads the blurb.
Ann is a central character in the new series – a follow-on from The Lakes which drew audiences of more than four million – and was filmed at various events in her four parishes last summer, including the summer party in Askrigg and the annual Semerwater service.
