DUCK! THERE’S A GAZEBO HEADING YOUR WAY

Despite an extremely breezy day causing excitement on the Low Mill site with gazebos taking flight and ending up in the beck, the duck race went ahead very successfully on Bank Holiday Sunday. A thousand plastic ducks were cast afloat in the beck and all those with tickets were eagerly watching to see how far their duck got. Thankfully, despite the torrential rain of the previous day, all ducks were safely retrieved at the finish line! There was a good turnout of visitors, despite the chilly weather and copious other events on over the weekend, and a total of £1389  was raised which will be doubled by HSBC under their match funding scheme to £2,778 which is great. Friends of Low Mill, and friends of Friends, worked hard to make the race such a success. Thanks to all who supported the day, and also to HSBC for their very generous funding.
The match-funding was not from Barclays, who had sponsored the race in previous years, and as was stated in the printed edition of Outlook. In fact, as we say above, it was HSBC.

NOT MUCH SUN BUT PLENTY OF FUN

Keepers of the cakes - Tricia and Jackie resist temptation

It’s hard to keep up with everything that’s been happening in this so-called silly season – the time when not much is supposed to happen in a sleepy rural village like Askrigg. Sleepy? Not really a word we associate with this busy spot on the Wensleydale map. Lots has been going on in July and August: concerts, festivals, a parish party and a family fun day to name just a few. And there’s more to come: watch this space for news and pictures of the duck race – later today – the produce show at Askrigg village hall (tomorrow) and the lovely flower festival at Stalling Busk during the weekend. We didn’t manage to capture it all on camera but if you have any pictures, and even a small write-up, please email them to betsy@bottomchapel.co.uk. In the meantime we’re starting to plan the next issue of Oswald’s Outlook. It will be published on Tuesday 27 September and final copy deadline is Tuesday 20. Meanwhile here are a few pictures of the parish party.

The slippery slope to fun and games

Fleeces and cable-knits were the order of the day

DISTRIBUTORS’ GET-TOGETHER

We’ve just endured the harshest winter for around 40 years. yet despite the snow and ice a small army of around 20 distributors have been out and about in the community delivering the 600-plus copies of Oswald’s Outlook to neighbours and friends.

The vicar, Ann Chapman, thought it was time we said thank you to all of them.

“It’s easy to take people for granted and assume they are happy to go on doing what they’ve always done, especially in a voluntary organisation like the church. So from time to time we need to get together just to thank people for their efforts,” said Ann

So in February there was a get-together at Bottom Chapel for a light supper, a glass of wine, lots of conversation, and ideas for future issues. Thanks to all for coming, to all who couldn’t make it, and to those who’ve done the work in the past but had to give up for one reason or another.
