SUNSHINE, SUNSHINE: PIERS’ LATEST ONE-MAN SHOW

Piers at work in his studio

The Herriot Gallery in Hawes has a proud tradition of show-casing the work of  leadings Dales’ artists, not least among them our own Piers Browne. There’s always a good collection of Piers’ work to be found there, and now this gem of a gallery in the centre of Hawes is staging a major one-man exhibition of stunning new works by Piers, called Sunshine, Sunshine. It’s on until 27 November so lots of opportunity to see this collection of oils and etchings. The Herriot Gallery houses a constantly changing selection of paintings and other artwork within the Herriot building. Full details about the gallery are available on The Herriot Gallery’s own website, where you can also find full details of Piers’ show.
Herriot’s also comprises  Herriot’s Guest House and Herriot’s Kitchen. The Kitchen is housed within the gallery and has a selection of lovely home-cooked food and hot drinks so you can browse the exhibition and then contemplate over lunch or elevenses which of Piers’ works you want to buy.

‘THE REAL-LIFE VICAR OF DIBLEY’

Oh really? It may not be quite how we see our vicar, Ann Chapman, but that’s how she’s described in the press release for the new 12-part ITV1 series, The Dales, which started Monday 28 March at 8.00pm.
“From the Wensleydale Railway to Leyburn Brass Band and a real-life Vicar of Dibley, The Dales provides a unique insight into one of England’s most iconic locations through the eyes of the people who live there,” reads the blurb.
Ann is a central character in the new series – a follow-on from The Lakes which drew audiences of more than four million – and was filmed at various events in her four parishes last summer, including the summer party in Askrigg and the annual Semerwater service.

EASTER IN THE UPPER DALE

Canon Adrian Alker, director of mission resourcing for the diocese of Ripon and Leeds, will lead daily meditations of approximately 20 minutes’ duration throughout Holy Week, preaching on Palm Sunday (17 April), Good Friday and Easter Day in the churches in Hawes, Hardraw, Askrigg and Stalling Busk. He will set the Christian story of Jesus “in its actual historical context,” he says.
“Over the course of the week and following the account in Mark’s gospel, we shall be exploring the last week of Jesus’ life on this earth. The passages of scripture will be scrutinized with some vigour and honesty to allow the world of Lower Galilee in the first century to come through.”
Adrian was Vicar of St Mark’s Church in Broomhill, Sheffield for 20 years and founded there the Centre for Radical Christianity. He was made an honorary canon of Sheffield cathedral and given an honorary degree from Sheffield University for his services to the community.
