There are four churches in the benefice: St Oswald’s, Askrigg (the ‘mother’ church), St Matthew’s, Stalling Busk, St Mary and St John, Hardraw and St Margaret’s in Hawes. Until 1930, when Askrigg joined with Stalling Busk, all four churches were separate livings with a priest of their own. Then, in 1953, Hardraw was joined with Hawes and in 2009 all four became one benefice, a consequence of the general decline of rural populations over many years. Former churchwarden at St Oswald’s, MaryRose Kearney gives a brief history of each. Click on each to get details of the churches and the services.
