JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

ASKRIGG PROGRAMME

A street party on the cobbles outside St Oswald’s Church, a free Jubilee mug – unique to Askrigg – for everyone 16 and under, and a spectacular beacon burning on Ellerkin as part of a nationwide chain: just some of the special treats the Askrigg Jubilee planning committee has organised for the Jubilee weekend, Saturday 2 to Tuesday 5 June this year. And in the midst of it all will be the excitement of the annual children’s sports day. The planning committee was convened by the parish council, from a group of volunteers. There was enough money – some from the Millennium Fund, and £500 donated to the village by the disbanded bowls club – to foot the bill for necessary expenses. Nevertheless, it was felt that there should be a contingency for any extras that might crop up, and Jo Hammond raised £316 at her coffee morning in April.
Extra souvenir mugs will be purchased, and a limited number will be available for sale. But they’re likely to be popular so they’ll be sold on a first come, first served basis. Details nearer the time.
